"Leila Wa Nour"

The sound of the bombs was getting unbearably close. She looked back at the house one last time. She thought that the place in which she built a life was soon going to turn into ashes. She had one last moment to pull out her husband's picture from the drawer. The war had taken him only a week earlier. Why had he left her she asked herself? Why did he have to leave her with the responsibility of a child? She asked herself how she would shelter her thirteen-year-old daughter from the traumatism of war and from death. She held her daughters hand as firmly as she could as she ran towards a safer zone. She hated the feeling that this tiny fragile hand could slip away any moment. Wondering the streets with no destination, she thought of the person she had become. Had she lost her identity?   Had the war stolen it from her?   She was nothing but another nomad trying to survive. It was clear to her now that the passport she was holding onto so tight was yet another piece of meaningless paper. Her name, her address, her birth date where buried beneath the rubble caused by the war.
